SUMMARY:CNCR-seminar series: Synaptic Communication between Neurons and Cancer Cells
DESCRIPTION:Alien Contacts: Synaptic Communication between Neurons and Cancer Cells\nProf. Dr. Thomas Kuner\, Institute for Anatomy & Cell Biology\, Heidelberg University \nHost: Matthijs Verhage\nLocation: Spectrum 5\, VU Research building \nProfessor Thomas Kuner is a leading neuroscientist and Director of the Department of Functional Neuroanatomy at Heidelberg University whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of brain-tumor biology and neuro-oncology. His research integrates neuroanatomical\, electrophysiological\, and imaging techniques to explore how neural circuits interact with disease states\, particularly malignant brain tumors. Kuner’s work has been pivotal in demonstrating that glioblastoma cells do not exist in isolation but form functional communication networks with healthy neurons. \nA landmark achievement in his career was co-supervising the groundbreaking 2019 Nature paper “Glutamatergic synaptic input to glioma cells drives brain tumour progression.” In this study\, Kuner and colleagues showed for the first time that neurons form bona fide excitatory synapses onto glioma cells\, using ultrastructural and functional evidence to reveal that glutamatergic signaling from neurons drives tumor growth and invasion. These synaptic contacts mirror normal\nneuronal synapses in structure and function\, suggesting that brain activity can accelerate malignancy. \nThis discovery has reshaped the field of cancer neuroscience by identifying a direct neuronal influence on tumor progression and opening avenues for therapeutic intervention. It has also led to high-profile recognition: Kuner and his collaborators were awarded the BIAL Award in Biomedicine in 2024 for this work\, which has propelled clinical trials testing synaptic signaling blockers in glioblastoma patients. \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://vu-live.zoom.us/j/93378349128?pwd=WVVvRU8vOG1FeFJLODU5S0Z4azFHQT09 \nMeeting ID: 933 7834 9128\nPasscode: seminar \n

SUMMARY:Collaborative workshops NWA ORC 2026
DESCRIPTION:Between 6 February and 17 March 2026\, NWO will be organising collaborative workshops for the twelve themes in the NWA ORC 2026. During the workshops\, you will meet researchers and parties interested in a specific theme and explore opportunities to combine ideas. Participants will gain insight into who is interested in developing a proposal and which consortia are being formed. \nWho is it for?\nThe workshops are open to anyone who wants to contribute to research on one of the twelve themes. Two consecutive workshops will be organised for each theme\, during which you will be brought into contact with other interested parties and supported in combining research ideas and exploring opportunities for collaboration. The meetings contribute to the creation of new and diverse collaborations. \nTo participate in the collaborative workshops\, you must register in advance. This form asks\, among other things\, about your expertise and contribution to the impact of the theme. These registrations form the basis of the workshops and will be shared with the participants in advance. \nGood to know: the intended main applicant must be present at both collaborative workshops on the relevant theme\, or send a substitute. If a substitute participates\, they may replace a maximum of one main applicant at a time. Substitutes must register using the form. \nDates and location\nTwo consecutive workshops will be organised for each of the twelve themes. The meetings will take place in the afternoon in the Beatrix Building\, Jaarbeurs Utrecht. The walk-in lunch will start at 12:00\, followed by the programme at 13:00. The substantive programme will end no later than 17:00\, followed by drinks. \nThe following theme might be of particular interest to Adore researchers:\nThe right balance in immune responses: multidisciplinary insights for regenerative therapies \nRoute: Regenerative medicine: gamechanger on the way to wide application \n\nWorkshop 1: 11 February 2026\nWorkshop 2: 12 March 2026\n\nSign up here to join the collaborative workshops.

SUMMARY:Cancer Neuroscience Conference
DESCRIPTION:The nervous system influences cancer in many ways\, and vice versa. This bidirectional crosstalk between both the central and peripheral nervous system and cancer has changed our understanding of malignant diseases throughout the body. Recent seminal discoveries in the emerging field of cancer neuroscience have already led to new therapeutic concepts that target harmful neuro-cancer interactions. \nThe first EACR conference on this exciting and rapidly evolving topic brings together international leaders of the field: to identify the most relevant current insights\, and to develop a roadmap for future preclinical\, translational and clinical research. \nRegistration for this conference has now closed.
