SUMMARY:Workshop Intellectual Property for Drug Repurposing (hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Intellectual Property for Drug Repurposing \nDrug repurposing offers major opportunities to accelerate the development of new treatments\, particularly for rare diseases. Intellectual property (IP) can play an important role in determining whether repurposed therapies can be developed in a socially responsible way and ultimately reach patients. \nThis workshop is organised by RARE-NL in collaboration with the Netherlands Patent Office (part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs). The session provides a practical introduction to intellectual property in the context of drug repurposing and socially responsible development of medicines. \nWhat you will learn and what to expect \nThis interactive workshop provides a practical introduction to intellectual property and its role in drug repurposing. Participants will gain insight into: \n• The basic principles of intellectual property and patent protection relevant to drug repurposing\n• How IP and regulatory exclusivities influence development strategies and patient access\n• How second medical use patents and other protection strategies are applied in repurposing\n• How to search and interpret patent information using publicly available databases\n• How IP can be used strategically to support responsible development\, collaborations and follow-up funding \nThe session includes practical examples\, case discussions and opportunities to ask project-specific questions. Part of the workshop will be hands-on; participants attending on site are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet\, as working with patent databases is not suitable on a smartphone. No prior IP experience is required. \nWhy RARE-NL organises this workshop \nRARE-NL supports researchers and other project teams who aim to translate academic and clinical repurposing research into real-world patient access under socially responsible terms. Within drug repurposing\, intellectual property is often approached mainly from a legal or commercial perspective. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Boudewijn Lelieveldt (LUMC)\nLocation: O|2 building\, Auditorium \nThe rapid advancements in single-cell and spatial -OMICS measurement technologies are currently revolutionizing life-sciences\, and high-dimensional data collections have become nearly ubiquitous across the life-sciences. However\, directly interpreting high-dimensional data poses considerable challenges: as a result\, the demand for algorithms that create low-dimensional  representations to help explore and interpret such data has grown significantly. Such algorithms reduce to dimensionality of the data to more interpretable and manageable proportions\, and their usage has become widespread in life sciences in general. \nThis seminar aims to provide a basic understanding of technologies for dimensionality reduction\, with a focus how these can be utilized in life-sciences research. The seminar consists of 3 parts: \n\nIntroduction into the concept of high-dimensional data\, and the basics of linear dimensionality reduction.\nThe algorithmic basics of two popular non-linear dimensionality techniques (tSNE\, UMAP)\, explained for entry-level life-scientists\nA critical perspective on several pros and cons inherent to non-linear dimensionality reduction (scalability\, faithful data representation\, interpretability). Across the day\, we will guide you through the different sections of a grant application\, providing practical tips and actionable strategies to improve your proposals. \nThe early morning sessions will focus on high-level topics essential to grant writing\, such as open science\, data management\, and valorisation. These sessions will introduce key concepts and provide an overview of what researchers need to know when addressing these areas in their grant proposals. While all participants are encouraged to join\, researchers with prior knowledge in these topics may choose to start their day with the later sessions\, beginning at 10:30. \nIn the midday and afternoon sessions\, the focus will shift to practical tools and hands-on activities\, such as creating a multi-year funding plan\, developing a narrative CV\, and applying effective writing techniques. Participants will also learn to use writing templates to improve structure\, clarity\, and cohesion\, and will receive tips for writing compelling abstracts and grant sections. \nThe course concludes with an interactive workshop where participants will pair up to review and refine each other’s abstracts\, putting the day’s lessons into practice. \nAmsterdam UMC postdocs and final-year PhD students are invited to join this course\, which is designed to benefit both beginners and experienced grant writers.
